Benjamin Shapiro, PhD

Benjamin Shapiro, PhD is a researcher and engineer working at the intersection of machine learning, biomedicine, and product development. He earned his PhD in Computer Science from Johns Hopkins University, and holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of California, Berkeley. His research and applied work have focused on interpretable probabilistic modeling, multimodal machine learning, and the use and development of AI in clinical and biomedical settings.

Dr. Shapiro has contributed to AI and machine learning efforts across academia and industry, including work at Johns Hopkins, Harvard Medical School, Illumina, Pandora, and GSK. He has a particular interest in making complex machine learning systems more useful, interpretable, and grounded in real-world health and scientific needs. In addition to his research and technical work, Dr. Shapiro advises organizations working at the intersection of health, technology, innovation, and sustainability, including Woodcross Capital and Food Systems Innovations. He brings to BRITE a passion for translating technological innovation into real and meaningful improvements to human health and life.
