Journalism

Build your portfolio and uncover stories that matter. As a member of our journalism team, you’ll report on scientific findings, investigate real-world failures, and write impactful stories that help prevent future disasters and save lives.

Oppertunity Description

Some stories get buried. Others never get told. But at BRITE Institute, we believe the right story, told clearly and truthfully, can move people to action.

As a journalist at our institute, you’ll investigate and report on topics that align with BRITE’s mission—ranging from cutting-edge research to real-world failures like medical mishaps, infrastructure breakdowns, and AI-related risk.  You can choose to focus on just one area - such as medicine and healthcare - or explore a range of stories.  You’ll also help communicate key findings from BRITE’s research in a way that is engaging, accurate, and accessible to the public.

This role is ideal for aspiring and beginning journalists with a passion for public interest reporting, investigative storytelling, and accurate science communication. Whether you’re building your portfolio or preparing to advance your career in journalism, you’ll get the chance to write impactful stories, sharpen your reporting skills, and even, for those committed, engage in investigative journalism.

Some prior journalism experience is recommended.

Task Availability

This role can taken as an independent contributor or a key team member.  The independent contributor role receives less guidance and feedback, and thus may not be suitable for applicants who are just starting out in journalism, such as those with only high school or a year of college student journalism.

Requirements

  • Excellent written communication skills
  • Strong research skills
  • Ability to identify compelling stories and pitch article ideas
  • Strong ethics, professionalism, and commitment to factual accuracy
  • Self-motivation and ability to meet deadlines
  • Previous journalism experience, including student journalism, is recommended but not required.

Application Instructions

You will be asked to submit 2-3 work samples as part of the application process. These work samples are to showcase your writing and reporting skills. These work samples can cover any topic - there is no need for them to relate in any way to BRITE Institute's work.
